<text>Paul writes home to his father from his new plantation property in Greene County, Alabama, noting his journey from North Carolina to Alabama took one week. Paul describes the health of slaves and a process of inspection. Paul indicates slaves are tired of a diet of pickled pork and relays provisions available on the plantation (corn, oats). Paul discusses the cotton crop, workload of slaves (pounds picked per person, per day), and yield. Paul references plantation facilities like a gin house and blow rooms for drying cotton. Paul discusses his impressions of the overseer Lewellyn, noting he has employed him for another year, though the "negros fear him a little more than I wish." Paul receives a tax bill, notes prices for warehousing at Candy's Landing, and discusses arrangements for shipping cotton. Paul mentions mules dying and the need for more. Paul discusses the condition of slave clothing and the need for supplies like wool. Paul relays thoughts of family back home. The letter closes with a long list of slave names and the pounds of cotton each picked in a day.</text>

<text>Paul writes home to his father from a road trip to Alabama, relaying details of the trip involving stagecoach and steamboat. Paul was displeased to share a coach with "negroes" en route from Atlanta to Chehaw. Paul refers to counties he saw in "new Georgia" as "poor" and "broken." Paul is uncertain of his route to Greensboro up rivers unless rain makes them more navigable. Paul notes his lack of acquaintances south of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and that he misses the company of a Mr. Rayner who apparently traveled with Paul as far as Atlanta. Paul notes seeing many emigrants heading west to Arkansas and Texas. Paul notes seeing an indifferent crop of cotton and corn around the south, little activity in markets, and good provisions. He relays the pricing for cotton.</text>

A slave named Edmund has died, others are well, and matters of setting up the plantation are discussed ("preparing timber to repair the negro houses," need to purchase more mules). The expected crop and pricing are mentioned. Paul notes he is anxious to return home and that he has received correspondence from his father. Paul's impression of the overseer Lewellyn is thus far favorable, though he has told Lewellyn that his Alabama contact Mr. Ruffin is to be "master of him" while he is away.</text>

The party of slaves relocated from North Carolina to Alabama arrived the prior day on December 6th with their escort Mr. Laws. Paul relays difficulty converting checks to cash for supplies. Paul was surprised by the poor condition of the cabins into which relocated slaves are placed. Paul looks to employ a Mister Lewellyn as overseer of his new plantation, and notes he would prefer to hire a man with a family. Paul references "sickly river plantations" nearby and notes he would never hire out a "negro of mine" presumably into such conditions. Paul notes the amount of money paid to Mr. Laws for services and the balance received from Mr. Laws for transporting slaves. Paul notes supplies ordered for the plantation (salt, pork) from Mobile, and suggests he may have to travel to Mobile to pay a $10,000 balance on the property. Paul notes missing family back home, and briefly mentions the "legislature" and "solicitude" over the matter of a railroad.</text>

<text>Paul writes from Mr. Ruffin's place in Marengo County, Alabama, to his father in Raleigh, that he has negotiated purchase of an 1100-acre plantation in Greene County, three miles from a landing, from a Col. Armistead, paying $17.50 per acre. The counsel of noted friends, Mr. Cain and Mr. Ruffin, encouraged Paul with the terms. Mobile notes and Charleston checks are discussed as forms of currency for payment of terms. The cotton harvests of 1840-44 are described, as are the existing buildings and general state of the plantation. The previous owner Armistead notes he has only lost "two grown negroes" from "disease of the climate in 10 years." Paul notes that Mr. Laws mentioned in a prior September 4, 1844, letter as the person overseeing the transfer of slaves from North Carolina to Alabama, has yet to arrive, but the slaves will be placed in cabins when they do and given provisions by Mr. Armistead in exchange for help in getting his harvest out.</text>
