Title
Paul Cameron Letter, September 28, 1847
Subject
Antebellum Plantation Life
Description
Paul writes to his father from his North Carolina plantation Fairntosh. Paul's sister Mildred is referenced as sick and receiving treatment in Philadelphia. Paul corrects his father's misinformation that North Carolina's Governor Morehead has died. Paul relays the health of family members and then slaves, noting three recent slave children dying of "chills." Paul mentions harvesting corn, bartering flour for leather, and preparing shoes. Paul relays the story of a local marriage scandal. Someone named Virgil (overseer?) from the family's nearby Stagville plantation has relayed that sick slaves are better; Paul however notes several sick slaves at Fairntosh and one slave with a wounded hand.
