Title
Paul Cameron Letter, January 4, 1845
Subject
Antebellum Plantation Life
Description
From his new plantation in Alabama, Paul writes home to his father in North Carolina. The business negotiation of payment for 1674 acres of land in Greene County is discussed (mortgage, note, interest). A slave named Edmund has died, others are well, and matters of setting up the plantation are discussed ("preparing timber to repair the negro houses," need to purchase more mules). The expected crop and pricing are mentioned. Paul notes he is anxious to return home and that he has received correspondence from his father. Paul's impression of the overseer Lewellyn is thus far favorable, though he has told Lewellyn that his Alabama contact Mr. Ruffin is to be "master of him" while he is away.
